Exports and production remain at a low level

DIHK Head of Foreign Trade Volker Treier on current export and production figures

09/06/2026 - „German exports are slightly increasing, but only on paper. The war-driven surge in oil, gas, and raw material costs inflates export and import prices. In real terms, exports hardly increase. Also, production in the manufacturing industry remains stagnant, now reaching its lowest level in nine months.

The consequences of the war in the Middle East are weighing on German exporters. Additionally, structural problems within the country are decreasing international competitiveness. For the entire year, only stagnation of exports can be anticipated. Especially exports to our largest sales market, the United States, are currently 13 percent lower than the previous year. The US market has, overall, become less attractive for German companies due to US trade policies – especially from an exporter’s perspective. This also affects the multitude of German companies producing on-site in the States but simultaneously reliant on international supply chains.“
