26/11/2025 - “The shortage of skilled workers is particularly acute in MINT professions (Mathematics, Computer Science, Natural Sciences, Technology). The results of the MINT Report thus confirm the outcomes of numerous DIHK company surveys.
A valuable ray of hope is the increase in international students in MINT subjects. At present, more than 50,000 men and women from abroad successfully complete their studies in Germany each year – over half of them in a MINT subject. The sad reality is: ten years after starting their studies, more than half have left the country, even though two-thirds initially intended to stay. We cannot afford this.
It is therefore essential to make the legal framework for remaining in Germany more generous and to improve social integration. Universities should support these students more closely than they have so far. International mentoring or buddy programmes are particularly suitable for this purpose. Teaching formats with close ties to the labour market can also make a positive contribution. Furthermore, international graduates should be given the opportunity to gain practical experience in business at an early stage. Universities can contribute by establishing contacts with regional companies and chambers. Sponsorship programmes offering targeted support in the application process can also result in successful cooperation outcomes.
Above all, it is crucial to accompany international students on their way into the German labour market as effectively as possible.”
