EU and German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DIHK) address strategic dependencies amidst heightened US-China rivalry. Solutions lie in enhanced partnerships and expanded supply chains.
02/12/2025 - "Strategic dependencies, especially in critical raw materials, severely impact the German economy. The challenges are exacerbated by the growing rivalry between the USA and China – and businesses in Germany and Europe are among the most affected.
In the interest of the German economy, Europe must act decisively and united as a sovereign player in this geopolitical tension. However, state-led interventions in entrepreneurial decisions would not be the right approach. The design of supply chains, which may now seem geopolitically appropriate, must primarily remain the responsibility of the companies.
Economic strategies from Brussels and Berlin must focus on improving the framework conditions: On a European level, this means strengthening international trade partnerships. The goal must be to diversify supply chains and thereby increase the resilience of the German and European economies. State defence measures should be a last resort.
While the EU proposals for stockpiling and potential export restrictions on critical raw materials and scraps are critically evaluated due to significant market interventions, companies place high hopes on an ambitious ResourceEU strategy. This strategy can significantly contribute to quickly and sustainably improving the EU's resource resilience. Deepened international partnerships and specific raw material projects are key levers for greater economic stability and competitiveness."
