The German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) organisation supports the political goal to minimise CO₂ emissions. The German economy can take on a technological pioneering role, thus opening up opportunities for businesses.
The energy transition can only be successful with strong businesses. Germany's future is inseparably linked to an increase in economic strength. At the same time, the Russian attack on Ukraine has clearly demonstrated: Reliable and affordable gas deliveries from Russia will no longer be available. As a result, the German economy has lost its price advantage, particularly compared to Asian competitors, and the price disadvantage against American competitors has also grown significantly. Due to the still unresolved attacks on the Nord Stream pipelines, the aspect of energy security, in terms of supply reliability, is now at the top of the agenda.
Learning from the crisis
One year after the beginning of the most severe energy crisis in the history of Germany, we need to draw the necessary lessons and shape the future of energy supply under new conditions.
The shift in the energy mix from fossil fuels to renewable energies in Germany over the next seven years until 2030 is a Herculean task. Significant negative impacts on Germany as a business location are looming if political decisions are not made quickly. Only in this way can an affordable, secure, and climate-friendly energy supply for the German economy be ensured by 2030.
In its position paper, the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DIHK) explains in ten points what needs to be done to achieve this goal:
