Reduction of the air traffic tax long overdue

DIHK Head of Transport Policy Dirk Binding on the cabinet decision to amend the Air Traffic Tax Act

01/04/2026 - "The reduction of the air traffic tax has been overdue for companies for a long time. The current weakness of Germany's aviation location is increasingly becoming a location risk. Many industries depend on reliable international connections - from the export industry to tourism, culture, and trade fairs. The return to the previous tax level is therefore an important signal for the entire economic location.

But this is not enough. Compared to other European countries, the burden remains too high. The complete abolition of the tax on commercial flights would be a necessary next step. Germany is ideally situated geographically to serve as a European air hub. We should seize this opportunity."
