Venezuela: Political crises are poison for the global economy

On the economic consequences of developments in Venezuela, DIHK's Head of Foreign Trade Volker Treier states:

06.01.2026 - "Economic relations between Germany and Venezuela persist only at a very low level. Currently, there are only a few German companies on-site. Reasons for this include the generally desolate economic condition and concerns about legal certainty. Therefore, the immediate impact of the current developments on German businesses is quite limited. The Venezuelan economy has been in a downward spiral for at least a decade. Venezuela's GDP almost decimated itself between 2012 and 2020.

How the situation on-site will further evolve remains unpredictable for now. Hence, no reliable statements about future economic relations can be made currently. Political crises, armed conflicts, and sudden geopolitical shifts fundamentally pose a risk of significant economic disruptions. This is poison for the global economy: It increases uncertainty and further undermines the already fragile principle of rule-based economic exchange."
