Export economy continues to decline, but industrial production stabilizes

DIHK Foreign Trade Chief Volker Treier on the production and export figures for November 2025

09.01.2025 - Germany's export industry is in danger of losing its international competitiveness. Export figures in November 2025 declined once again. For the entire year of 2025, the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DIHK) is forecasting a drop in exports by 1 percent. Relations with our key export partner, the USA, remain problematic in the new year. China reassumes its position as our most important trading partner, yet the prospects remain moderate as DIHK expects only neutral growth here.

On a positive note, higher imports and overwhelmingly favorable industrial production figures indicate that investments and production are picking up domestically. Overall, these are first signs of a sustainable stabilization of the industry by the year's end. However, there remains a long road ahead until old production levels can be restored.

We need resolute action now. Reliable, investment-friendly framework conditions must bolster our competitiveness. Meanwhile, it is critical to reduce dependency on individual trading partners and tap into new markets – particularly in India, Indonesia, and other Southeast Asian countries. New free trade agreements are key to achieving this.
