Four DIHK Proposals for Efficient and Effective Climate Protection

How can climate protection be ambitious, internationally coordinated, and economically viable? In a proposal paper, the DIHK identifies emissions trading, internationalisation, electrification, and energy policy as key levers.

High energy prices, excessive bureaucracy, state micromanagement, unclear infrastructure development: German energy policy poses significant challenges for many companies. Amid the Iran conflict driving oil and gas prices to new highs, it is increasingly evident that the current design of the energy transition imposes enormous cost burdens. The German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DIHK) has developed concrete proposals for efficient and effective climate protection.

Climate protection remains a central concern for German businesses. Companies are clearly committed to climate neutrality and are driving it forward with great initiative. Given the impact of the Middle East conflict on energy prices, it is all the more important to continue pursuing paths to climate neutrality to also reduce dependency on fossil fuels. However, it is also clear: 78 percent oil, gas, and coal in our energy supply cannot be replaced overnight.

"Die Energiewende hat sich festgefahren. Sie ist zu teuer, zu kompliziert, zu ineffizient. So wie es aktuell läuft, geht es nicht weiter"

The current path does not lead to the goal

The experiences of recent years show that the current trajectory toward climate neutrality is insufficient to achieve the objective and is economically unsustainable. Many companies are reaching their limits due to high costs, lengthy processes, uncertainties in developing new infrastructures, and internationally unequal conditions - with growing concern about competitiveness and acceptance, as the IHK Energy Transition Barometer demonstrates. Against this backdrop, the DIHK presents proposals to make climate protection more effective and efficient.
