Sustainability, with its three dimensions - economic, environmental, and social - is the guiding principle of German and European policy. Companies make a substantial contribution to this effort: Investments, innovations, and training ensure competitiveness and social participation.
The DIHK position paper "Achieving the UN Sustainability Goals – Perspectives from the Business World" explicitly links economic policy proposals with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) for the first time.
Sustainable Development Requires Viable Economies
Seven selected sustainability goals are the focal point. The topics range from securing skilled labour through training and education to energy and climate policy, financial, trade, and infrastructure policies. The approach: Sustainable development is more successful within a viable economic structure with robust companies – from family-owned businesses to internationally active corporations.
DIHK takes the perspective of sustainability very seriously, especially in light of its legal mandate to represent not only the interests of the entire commercial economy but also an overarching responsibility that explicitly includes the objectives of sustainable development. This commitment is also embedded in the legal mandate of the Chambers of Commerce and Industry and the promotion of the concept of "Honourable Merchants."
The goal is sustainable prosperity that meets ecological and social requirements while also aligning with business realities. Particularly with regard to the seven SDGs considered in the DIHK paper, the Chamber of Commerce organization already makes valuable contributions through numerous projects, initiatives, and programs.
