Safeguarding Europe's Competitiveness

Reducing bureaucracy, lowering energy costs, increasing the resilience of supply chains, leveraging the opportunities of digitalisation, and more: in mid-2023, the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DIHK) formulated ten guidelines for a strong EU economic location.

Europe needs a new competitiveness agenda to position itself well in a new global order. The international competitiveness of Europe's economic location is increasingly under pressure. Initiatives such as the Lisbon Strategy and Europe 2020 aimed to improve it; however, the goals set at those times were largely not achieved.

Only if Europe succeeds in combining the sustainable transformation of the economy with global competitiveness will other regions follow this model. Europe does not need to know better but to do better! Openness and interconnectedness in global trade are as important for Europe's economic location as supply security with affordable energy and raw materials or technological sovereignty in key technologies. From the economy's perspective, efficient regulation and administration that facilitate innovations, investments, and economic activities are indispensable.
