Reaktion von Volker Treier

"Uncertainty for German companies in US business remains high"

Dr. Volker Treier of the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DIHK) on the US Supreme Court ruling on IEEPA tariffs.

The Supreme Court of the United States has declared the tariffs imposed by President Trump on many trading partners unlawful. On this, Dr. Volker Treier, Head of Foreign Trade at the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DIHK), commented.

20/02/2026"For a year now, the new US high-tariff policy has been severely impacting German foreign trade. Although the implementation of relentless new tariff spirals in the USA may now be more challenging following today's ruling, uncertainty for German companies in US business remains high. There are still other instruments for restrictive trade measures in the hands of the US administration, which German businesses need to prepare for.

The European Union should respond to the ruling and potential new US tariffs with a cool head and advocate for reliable trade policy conditions for companies. It remains crucial to demand the reduction of all WTO-illegal tariffs from the USA – especially in areas like steel, aluminium, and derivatives. At the same time, the EU urgently needs to diversify its supply chains and support companies through trade agreements that open new markets with reliable partners."
