13.05.2026 - “Supply security is of central importance for the economy. However, the federal government's draft act to ensure the security of electricity supply and to provide new capacities follows the wrong path: The planned state-led technological steering towards gas-fired power plants increases dependencies and thus price risks due to geopolitical events, stifles innovations in the electricity market, and impedes operational climate neutrality because of rising electricity costs. Instead of reduced electricity costs for a broad spectrum of businesses through lowering electricity taxes for everyone, the government is introducing yet another levy. This exacerbates the competitive disadvantages of Germany as a business location.”
Instead of state micromanagement, the government should rely on market-based instruments: more efficient and cheaper than subsidies for new gas-fired power plants would be an obligation for electricity suppliers to secure power deliveries on the market. This would allow electricity supply security to be achieved in a technology-open manner at the lowest costs for the economy. The government must absolutely refrain from transferring the planned capacity tenders into a permanent modus.”
