Corporate Biodiversity: Biodiversity as an Asset

The protection of biodiversity is not only ecologically but also economically essential. The project 'Corporate Biodiversity' (UBi), supported by the DIHK Service GmbH, assists companies in integrating this vital aspect into their business strategies.

Biodiversity and business—at first glance, these may seem like two separate realms. However, upon closer inspection, they reveal a closely interwoven relationship. Eva Baumgärtner and Valentin Franklyn from UBi explain how companies rely on biodiversity and the interplay between business and nature.

"This is precisely what we aim to convey: that the economy requires intact ecosystems and how closely everything is interconnected with biodiversity," explains Eva Baumgärtner, Project Coordinator at UBi. This applies even to industries where the reliance on natural resources isn't immediately apparent, such as the automotive sector. "Numerous raw materials are needed to manufacture a car, such as rubber for tyres, metals for the body, and water for production processes. All these resources are supplied by nature."

"We raise awareness among small and medium-sized enterprises about risks in their supply chains. When ecosystems are damaged, we lose not only plants and animals but also critical raw materials for industries such as pharmaceuticals, construction, and food," emphasizes Valentin Franklyn, another Project Coordinator.

The UBi project targets all industries and provides support through Biodiversity Alliances established in collaboration with regional IHKs, according to Franklyn. "The focus is on guiding companies on biodiversity matters. What measures contribute to ecosystem protection, how to implement them, and who can assist are all addressed in our alliances."

The UBi team employs various formats. For instance, companies share their experiences with sustainability reporting in digital forums, while on-site coaching helps them learn how to plant and design their spaces to withstand heavy rain and heat, simultaneously creating more habitats for insects and small animals. Such measures also assist in the competition for skilled labour: "Green façades, roofs, and blooming outdoor areas enhance the work atmosphere and boost employee satisfaction," says Eva Baumgärtner.

Roadshows in IHK Districts

Since its launch in November 2021, the UBi project has gained considerable traction, spurred by EU sustainability regulations mandating more sustainable and transparent supply chains for companies. Baumgärtner and Franklyn are currently coordinating three regional IHK alliances, with at least two more set to follow this year.

They are in contact with about half of the German Chambers of Commerce and Industry (IHKs) and organise roadshows in the regions to advance biodiversity topics. An annual Dialogue Forum in Berlin further promotes exchanges between companies. The project is funded until the end of 2026.

Financial Stability with Healthy Ecosystems

Biodiversity also plays a crucial role in the financial sector. According to a study by the European Central Bank, 75% of corporate loans issued by Eurozone banks depend on at least one critical ecosystem service, highlighting the significant link between financial stability and ecosystem health. Biodiversity loss poses severe financial risks.

Reports like the World Economic Forum's Global Risk Report 2025 emphasize this importance, with biodiversity loss now ranking as the second largest risk in a ten-year outlook.

Additionally, the loss of biodiversity exacerbates the impacts of extreme weather events, which also rank among the top risks. Conversely, as noted on the website of the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation, intact ecosystems can mitigate the effects of, for example, heavy rainfall. Forests and wetlands act as water reservoirs, helping to reduce costly flood events affecting both companies and the public.

Thus, protecting biodiversity is not only ecological but also economically essential. Integrating biodiversity measures into business strategies strengthens the resilience and competitiveness of companies in the long term.
