Sebastian Bolay, DIHK research expert, comments:
11.02.2026 - “The EFI Report makes it clear in many areas that Germany's innovation engine is faltering. We see the consequences in companies every day: DIHK economic surveys show that investment plans in research and development have been below average for years. Currently, less than a third of companies are planning to invest in product innovations in Germany. As a result, the competitive edge of the German economy continues to deteriorate. Products 'made in Germany' are primarily purchased worldwide for their high quality. Research and development in companies are crucial prerequisites to staying ahead of the competition globally.
We urgently need innovation accelerators. The High-Tech Agenda shows promising approaches, which the federal government must now quickly bring to life. Additionally, policymakers must dismantle structural barriers to innovation as highlighted in the report. This includes, for example, reducing bureaucratic hurdles in the innovation process, passing the Real Laboratories Act, and swiftly implementing the IP strategy announced in the coalition agreement.
Only then can Germany become a dynamic innovation hub once again.”
