Evaluation and Recognition of Foreign Qualifications

Many international professionals want to work in Germany. But what do qualifications obtained abroad say about their expertise in this country? Since 2012, there has been a legal right to compare foreign qualifications with German ones. The ProRecognition project, located at the DIHK Service GmbH, helps with implementation.

Funded by the Federal Ministry of Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, ProRecognition supports foreign professionals with vocational or academic qualifications to have their expertise recognised in Germany and prepare them optimally for the German job market.

Application Already in Home Country

The legal right established in the Recognition Act is independent of residency status. This means that professionals can apply for recognition of their qualifications while still in their home country. This is where ProRecognition's advisory services come in.

International talents should be able to obtain information on their personal recognition opportunities in advance and get support in submitting applications. To this end, advisory offices have been established at the German Chambers of Commerce and Industry (AHKs) in Egypt, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Colombia, the Philippines, Morocco and Turkey.

Orientation on FEG Options

Since 2020, the Skilled Workers Immigration Act (FEG) has gradually expanded access to the German labour market (information available at www.make-it-in-germany.com). ProRecognition further supports international professionals by helping them determine which of the three paths – Skilled Workers Pillar, Experience Pillar, or Potential Pillar – best suits their individual circumstances, qualifications, and career goals.

High Interest

From 2015 to January 2026, the AHKs conducted around 40,000 consultations; more than 12,700 men and women applied for recognition, and nearly 3,000 professionals advised by the project are now working in Germany. More information about the project can be found on the DIHK Service GmbH website.
