What is it about?
The Federal Government's Digital Strategy aims to establish data laboratories in all federal ministries. The foundation for these laboratories was already laid during the last legislative period as part of the Data Strategy from January 2021. Many of these institutions are still in the development phase. They focus on data analysis and preparation and are intended to help public administration make data-driven decisions and optimise internal processes.
How can businesses benefit?
Data laboratories aim to increase data and digital competence in ministries. This allows ministries to make evidence-based decisions and provide better forecasts. For businesses, this is of great importance as it enables faster and more effective action. Certain developments (e.g., in health or energy) can be anticipated at an earlier stage.
An example
Data laboratories can play an important role in decision-making on measures to combat pandemics or mitigate other economic shocks. For example, a data laboratory could model the course of a pandemic, considering its impact on businesses. Statistical model forecasts could be used to determine the optimal timing of measures, estimate their effects on the further course, and evaluate their effectiveness in combating the pandemic. This would shield businesses from severe restrictive measures that do little to stop the spread of the pandemic.
