An exploration of trustworthy infrastructures for secure document exchange within diverse industries.
What is this about?
The establishment of data spaces aims to create a trustworthy infrastructure with common standards for secure data exchange – as envisioned at both the European (EU Data Strategy) and German levels (Coalition Agreement of the German Government)). Initially, these will be tailored to industry-specific requirements (e.g., for health, culture, or mobility).
Data spaces represent a self-contained network of decentralised computing systems. Any form of server or computer can be connected through connectors within this network. This setup enables data exchange between decentralised units. Unlike a database, data is not stored centrally but remains on the data owners' servers until an exchange is agreed. Using a catalogue format, each participant in the data space can view available resources and approach the providers for an exchange if interested.
How can businesses benefit?
Data spaces provide a variety of benefits for businesses, facilitating data exchange and unlocking digital business opportunities. A data catalogue offers companies a comprehensive overview of available data. With decentralised storage, businesses retain control over their data. Each exchange is individually negotiable, minimising the risk of losing business data. Moreover, data spaces set standards for shared material, ensuring compatibility with the companies' internal systems.
An example
An existing data space is the Mobility Data Space in the transport sector, where companies can voluntarily share data. Participants include transport providers, vehicle manufacturers, car rental companies, and insurers, as well as traffic authorities.
For instance, a roadworks department might want to determine whether bicycle traffic needs to be diverted off the road, or whether the distances between cars and bicycles on the road are sufficient. Through the Mobility Data Space, the department can request sensor data from a vehicle manufacturer. If they agree on the terms of exchange, the process is facilitated via the Mobility Data Space.
