Apprenticeship remains a decisive key for securing skilled workers and social participation

DIHK education expert Nico Schönefeldt on the DGB Apprenticeship Report 2026

20/08/2026“It is right and important that this year's report by the DGB youth focuses on the mental health of apprentices. In fact, mental stresses among young people have noticeably increased in recent years – not least due to the COVID-19 pandemic and global crises. This trend also affects vocational training. Training companies are aware of their responsibility and support their apprentices with personal mentoring, designated contacts, a culture of appreciation, and even health promotion initiatives.

At the same time, companies must not be left to face these challenges alone. Mental health is a cross-societal responsibility: schools, families, counselling centres, and policymakers all have a role to play. It's essential that vulnerable youth receive timely support and that assistance options are well-publicised.

The findings of the DGB Apprenticeship Report once again highlight that dual vocational training is a successful pathway into professional life for the vast majority of young people. Around two-thirds are satisfied or very satisfied with their apprenticeship. The German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) apprenticeship companies demonstrate great commitment to future skilled workers. Where issues arise during apprenticeships, the IHK training advisors stand ready to assist both apprentices and companies with advice and support.

Especially during economically challenging times, vocational training remains a decisive key to securing skilled workers and promoting social inclusion. For this reason, we need attractive training conditions, dedicated support for young people, and greater societal appreciation for vocational education.”
