Making the Energiewende a Success: Securing Competitiveness, Strengthening Responsibility, Seizing Opportunities

The Energiewende represents a significant challenge for the German economy.

Reliable and efficient framework conditions are therefore the basic prerequisites to shoulder the necessary investments by businesses in the transformation and to seize opportunities. In wide areas of the economy, however, the Energiewende is increasingly perceived as a risk to competitiveness, which additionally interferes with business resource planning and investment decisions through political micro-management. There is a lack of room for responsibility, innovation, and the required long-term planning security. Nevertheless, the transformation path towards climate neutrality also offers sustainable growth perspectives as the German economy can assume a technological leadership role in the growth of global markets. The willingness of companies or concepts is not lacking. What is missing is political trust in the efficiency of the market and the companies' trust in the government's capacity to steer successfully. A high level of bureaucracy is tying up urgently needed capacities and resources for practical implementation of the Energiewende.

At the European level, too, a competitive energy single market is still not fully functional despite some progress. State price regulations, slow cross-border grid development, and the pursuit of national energy autonomy continue to characterize the fragmented landscape of the European energy sector.
