Research and Innovation: Simplifying processes, driving innovations

Digitalisation, more climate-friendly energy supply or coping with demographic change – these challenges illustrate how much the German economy depends on research and innovation.

To strengthen Germany’s innovative capacity, the German government has set itself the goal of significantly increasing spending on research and development (R&D). This goal is correct, as research and development help companies remain internationally competitive through new products, services and technologies. New ideas and products "made in Germany" can also help to overcome crises sustainably.

However, companies also need suitable framework conditions for this. After all, the economy accounts for two-thirds of national R&D expenditure. Surveys conducted by the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) show that companies’ innovation activities are declining. To strengthen Germany as a location for innovation, politicians should examine and further develop the effectiveness of innovation funding in cooperation with business. At the same time, it is necessary to improve the economic framework conditions for private research and development activities. For German companies to invest more in innovation again, rapid, concerted action by politics, science and business is needed.
