An important step towards greater stability in transatlantic trade relations

DIHK Head of Foreign Trade Volker Treier comments on the planned vote in the European Parliament on the EU-USA trade agreement

25.03.2026 - "The vote in the European Parliament is an important step towards greater stability in transatlantic trade relations. It highlights that Europe is willing to constructively shape the development of trade relations with the USA. Clear framework conditions and improved planning security are crucially important, especially for the strong export-oriented German economy.

At the same time, the situation for our companies remains tense. The agreement between the EU and the USA from August 2025 still rests on shaky ground following the decision of the US Supreme Court. Furthermore, new, unfounded US trade investigations against the EU undermine mutual trust – with potential consequences in the form of additional tariffs already becoming foreseeable for many companies. One thing is clear: The EU neither manipulates its currency, nor does it build overcapacities to harm the USA, nor does it gain unfair competitive advantages through products made from forced labour.

Despite these ongoing uncertainties and protectionist tendencies from the USA, the EU should continue to act united and resolutely: Swift implementation of the EU-US agreement would help limit further escalations and achieve improvements regarding US steel and aluminium tariffs. At the same time, it is essential for the EU and the Federal Government to prioritise reducing strategic dependencies, even towards the USA. In this respect, we must find European solutions as quickly as possible and with determination in building and expanding security policies, in addressing all digital issues, and in improving general competitiveness."
