08.09.2026 - “The results of the new PISA study are a shock and a reflection of the experience of many training companies. They show a new low in student performance in Germany. After the massive collapse of results in 2022, the negative trend persists. Particularly concerning is the lack of basic skills. These deficits pose an immense obstacle to the success of the dual training system. The latest DIHK training survey reveals the massive challenges companies face in training their skilled workers due to inadequate school education. For example, four out of ten training companies lament deficits in maths, basic economic knowledge, or German language skills. Frequent gaps in science are noted by one in four companies, while shortcomings in English are noted by one in five. Nevertheless, more and more companies give young people with initial difficulties a chance. Companies support them mainly with tutoring offers, STEM promotion, and close, technical and personal guidance within the company. However, our training companies must not become the repair shop for a failed education policy. They cannot compensate for what was neglected in classrooms.

The PISA study released today highlights the weaknesses of our education system in imparting fundamental skills. Politics must now take action to ensure solid training readiness. This includes basic school knowledge such as reading, writing, arithmetic, as well as career selection maturity, which is equally important for training decisions.”
