The virtual event of the corporate network highlighted the importance of good operational conditions for the compatibility of family and work, essential for employees' performance.
Especially in times of skills shortages, demographic change, and multiple crises, it becomes evident: companies that promote compatibility enhance the motivation, health, and productivity of their employees. This positively impacts achieving corporate economic goals and strengthening resilience.
Employees can perform sustainably only if workplace culture, leadership, and organisation consider their life realities. Flexible working hours, childcare support, and remote work are therefore not added benefits but components of a modern, family-friendly work environment that ensures working ability.
Not Opposed to Performance – Quite the Contrary
Professor Dr. Jutta Rump from the Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society, Institute for Employment and Employability, emphasized in her keynote titled "Family Friendliness Creates Resilience and Unlocks Potential" how compatibility can become a structural prerequisite for sustainable performance and economic resilience: "Family friendliness is not opposed to performance. Quite the contrary: those who expect top performance must create conditions under which people remain willing and able to perform in the long term. Companies that save on compatibility pay the price later – through absenteeism, skills shortages, and reduced performance."
Understanding Compatibility as a Strategic Resource
During the subsequent panel discussion with company representatives and Professor Rump, it became clear that overstrain, high work density, and leadership errors can significantly impair employee performance. Companies are therefore required to better enable leaders to act in an employee-oriented manner and to understand compatibility as a strategic resource rather than a burden.
Younger generations, in particular, expect a working world that combines flexibility, purpose, and health. In practice, the economic significance of the topic is evident: those who save on compatibility often end up paying elsewhere. Conversely, innovative working time models, more efficient processes, and targeted use of AI can create new freedoms, thereby strengthening compatibility and performance.
