Functioning structures for prevention, medical care, and rehabilitation, as well as their quality and receptiveness to innovation, influence the working capacity and absenteeism of employees in companies. Good framework conditions for the healthcare economy thus not only benefit the companies in the sector but also the entire economy. Not least, regional or international crises repeatedly demonstrate the importance of a functional and resilient healthcare economy for the overall economy.
Existing regulations at the national, European, and international levels should be reviewed to enable sustainable performance. It is also important to establish framework conditions that are open to innovation across all service areas of the healthcare economy while keeping healthcare costs in mind.
To ensure an innovative and internationally competitive German healthcare economy in the future, legislators must address challenges such as demographic change, contemporary training and securing skilled workers, modernization of care structures, and medical-technological progress amidst limited resources. Furthermore, to strengthen competitiveness at the national and European levels, framework conditions should be created to fully exploit the potential of future fields such as biotechnology, medical technology, and the pharmaceutical industry. Especially with regard to the Medical Devices Regulation, swift adjustments are needed to prevent further gaps in healthcare provision.
