The conference: complete videotaped overview

G7 summit at Évian, EU Council, US tariff agreements, the war in Iran – along with an ambitious reform package: The timing of the DIHK-ESMT conference was anything but coincidental. Here you can watch the analyses and recommendations of leading economists in a video recording.

Opening by Helena Melnikov and Jörg Rocholl

Moderated by Inga Michler, the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DIHK) General Manager Helena Melnikov and Jörg Rocholl, President of the ESMT Berlin and member of the new pension commission, inaugurated the event "Economic Vision" on 17 June at the House of German Business.

Melnikov tempered excessive expectations: "Hopes have been overrated in the past twelve months." Ideas and proposals are already on the table – what is missing is the political will. "There are many thoroughly developed proposals on the table. It is now a question of using them" – that is the expectation, not just hope.

"Without the right conditions for businesses in place, there will be no new companies, no innovation, no investments here. Then we’ll face a distribution debate. And as far as I know, redistribution has never led to growth."

Jörg Rocholl corrected a Berlin rumour: The commission paper had not yet been presented to the chancellor's office. "As of 9:50 a.m., I was still in a virtual meeting." The submission was scheduled for the following Tuesday. At the same time, he expressed confidence: "Many of the ideas mentioned by several economists over the past weeks are naturally influencing what we are discussing." High expectations from politics might indeed be an argument in favour of working through a commission: A united position provides better chances for comprehensive implementation.

"Even if pensions or other reform projects are now implemented – this is not the end of the discussions still to be had."
